discoverは'dis（逆）'+cover（覆う）'で「覆いを取り除く」。「これまで知られていなかった、未知のものを発見する」という意味である。「気づく」「わかる」という意味へと発展する。「見つける、発見する」という意味ではfindが用いられるが、「すでに知っているもの（失くしたものなど）を見つける」というニュアンスがあり、「新しいものを発見する」というdiscoverとはそのような点で異なる。
