seekは「探し求める」という意味。目に見えないものを「探す」「手に入れようとする」という意味で使われる。例えばfortune（財産），advice（アドバイス），truth（真実）といった語を目的語としてとる。一般的な辞書では、「（人やものを）探す」という用法もあるが、形があるものに対してはlook forがより多く使われる傾向にある。searchは「（場所などを）探す」という意味である。
