examinationは'examine（検査する）'+'tion（名詞化）'。「試験」の意味のほか、詳細を調べる、というニュアンスが含まれ「考察」「調査」という意味となる。investigationは、事故原因を調べるような公的な意味での調査、研究に用いられる。
