gatherの原義は、「散らばっているものを寄せ集める」という意味。モノに限らず人のほか、情報や知識、力加減など見えないものまで、あちこちにあるものを一つの場所に集めるという語感をもつ。「推測する」の意味も、手に入る情報や過去に得た知識などを集めて考える、という意味。
collectはgatherと似ているが「目的をもって収集する」という意味が含まれ、「推測する」という意味は含まれない。assembleは「人やモノを集めて、組織する、組み立てる」という意味がある。
