escapeは'es（外へ）'+''cape（マント、外套）'で「マントから抜け出す」。束縛・監禁されている状態、とどまっている状態から「逃げる」「逃れる」「抜け出す」「脱出する」「逃亡する」という意味のほか、危険や災いなどから「逃げる」「逃れる」という意味がある。液体や気体が「漏れる」という意味でも用いられる。
「逃げる、逃亡する」の意味ではrun awayも用いられるが、runやawayの語感から「走って逃げる」というニュアンスが強くなる。
一方で「避ける、逃れる」の意味ではavoidやevade,eludeも似た意味をもつが、avoidは「意識して避ける」、evadeは「巧妙に避ける」、eludeは「身をかわして避ける」という意味で語感が異なる。
